sql loader date format

I'm having some problems with sqlloader and date formats. This seems rather simple and I'm not sure where the problem is. I'm running an oracle 7.3.4 database and the control file looks like this :

Load the data from the file
--
LOAD DATA INFILE * APPEND INTO TABLE FOO FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' ( ID INTEGER, HIRE_DT DATE "MM/DD/YYYY", ... ) BEGINDATA 1003,11/01/1985,...

When I run the program, I get this error message in the log file:

Record 1: Rejected - Error on table foo, column HIRE_DT. ORA-01847: day of month must be between 1 and last day of month

Whats up? I checked my calendar and there was Nov 1st in 1985.
