They perform work.I have never seen an Oracle package produces result sets to the user.
What are they? I'll try them.something like "sp_who" that generates a list of all users connected to the database
and others that allow general interogation of the dictionary tables by executing a command. Not writing scripts.

True. But it can be done. But I find the rest of it easier. Oracles environment is cumbersome.
During my last years experience my database has locked, crashed and and had runaway processess only a few times.
But when it has it never leaves anything in the alert log. Sybase always was able to get something to the log before it ate it.
