Rebuilding Indexes ORACLE 7.3.2.3.2 DEC Alpha VMS 7.1 (Don't laugh)

Can anyone help me......please.
I have been informed by the Technical Support Group where I work
(Littlewoods Organisation UK) that re-building indexes in ORACLE
7.3.2.3.2 may result in corruption of my databases (I'm the team newish
(February this year) DBA for my area of the company).
Is this true ??
I'm working on a DEC Alpha under VMS 7.1
