This is comp.databases.oracle.server - what answer are you expecting? :-)
The choice of software and hardware to use can only be made within the business context - what in-house IT skills exist, what is the expected growth of the system, what is the network infrastructure, what are the budget constraints, development tools and skills, existing hardware architecture, etc. etc.
There are no simple answers to the question of "what is the best database and best platform".
Some More Bonus Questions to your Bonus Question - do you -really- think that Microsoft will EVER support other operating systems with the back office products? Is Bill Gates really a Good Guy (tm). And Microsoft never did screw Netscape, Intuit, Dell, Compaq, Sun and the many other companies, did they?
regards,
Billy
