Are either of you folks looking at your *.err and *.log files? If so, anything
relevant in there?

Other points:

Oracle sales rep told us to stay away from 3.x for now. We are at 2.1. and doing OK.

Also, check OS networking stuff. You may have some tcp/ip tweaking opportunities...
