Weird Table Name in Oracle 7.3.4

One of our users has managed to create a table name as follows:

  q198.jan.98

This is how it shows when querying dba_tables. Note that it is in lower case and contains periods.

How was the user able to do this? I am not able to describe it in SQL*Plus or even attempt to remove the offending table. I am thinking of directly changing the data in the data dictionary so that I can remove this table but would rather not.
