Why moving indices to a seperate file declines the INSERTS?

I've inherited a small database (~5 gig) with some design and performance problems. One the
first things I noticed the data and indices reside on the same tablespace, I moved the indices to a
separate file. To very much of my surprise the performance declined drastically for INSERT transactions!!!?, shouldn't it have been other way round?

Environment: NT4.0, Oracle 8.04

Thanks in advance,
Adam Tadj
