crontab shutdown and start

I am a beginner and I use Oracle 8 and Sun Solaris 2.6. I need to create a script used by crontab to shut down and start up the database. During the downtime the content of the database is suposed to be backed up by the normal backup-program used for all computers in my department.

In $ORACLE_HOME/bin/ there is two scripts called dbstart and dbshut. But in the comments of the script it is said: "should ONLY be executed as part of the system boot procedure".
