Nope, not really.
Public synonyms provide an easy setup for single application databases. Problem arrises the moment you want to run more than one application on the same instance ... then you might have a name conflict between the applications and then public synonyms are not fun.

Look at the dictionary. It's all public synonyms ... and it works fast and secure enough, right?
