First, you must arrange a destination directory for your archived log files. You may want a separate file system for this. Query V$LOG_HISTORY to find out how many MB of logs will be archived daily. Pay attention to peak logging as well as average. Multiply (the average + a saftey factor) by the number of days to keep archived logs online. This will tell you the size you need in the file system. If this is a big number, a separate file system might be a good idea. Second, shutdown the database.
Third, edit the init$ORACLE_SID.ora file:

	LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT = arch%S.arc
	LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST = the destination path from step1
	LOG_ARCHIVE_START=TRUE

Fourth, startup mount.
Fifth, issue ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG;
Sixth, issue ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
Seventh, shutdown.
Eighth, cold backup database, including control files. Finally, startup.

You don't have to do 7 & 8 if you do a hot backup at once. Just be aware that you are not protected until the hot backup is successful! Received on Sat Feb 21 1998 - 00:00:00 CST
