I'm not sure about the second question, but a definate yes on the first. As
with you, I wondered it this was necessary. I did not have mirrored redo logs
and one of the redo logs got corrupted. Because there was no mirror, the db
crashed. I created a mirror for each group. Again, the same redo file got
corrupted but this time the db did not crash because it could still write to
the mirror. I dropped the corrupt member and recreated it with no problems.
