Home -> Community -> Usenet -> c.d.o.server -> BLOBs in 7.3; Good or bad idea?
Hi Oracle Gurus,
We are running WinNT 4.0 / Oracle 7.3.
One of our developers in the process of specing a
report server application. He has had the great idea
of storing the report output files in the database as
BLOBs (Long datatype). The reports will be several
megabytes in size and there will probably be many
(100's?, 1000's?) of them.
My gut feeling is that I'd rather not do it. The last I was involved with something like this (quite some time ago, I admit) it didn't work very well.
Could any of you with experience storing BLOBs in the database please share your thoughts with me? Why is this a good/bad idea? What kind of problems will I encounter as DBA? Does Oracle handle BLOB's efficiently?
TIA,
Dana Stockler
