I 'm not sure what went wrong but did you check the file privileges and owner of all the oracle files ? Something could have gone different .

When you do a copy of the disks containing the database did you also clone the root directory ?

I you could supply some more info I'll see if I could help coz I think I have tried this before with the same oracle version and O.S. but that was more than 4 years ago .
