Oracle replication vs. hot standby server

Hi Gurus:

We are planning a system as close as possible to 7/24. We have two sites about 15 miles apart in a town connected by a ATM network. For disaster recovery we plan to have a box acting as a hot standby server at the backup site, always in a state of recovery from the archive redo logs of the main server.

In case of disaster at the first site, the application would also shift from main site to backup site.

We are wondering if a hot standby server is the way to go or synchronous replication is the way to go. We are a AIX/RS 6000 shop and can go MPP if needed. However, our application does not support parallel server, so that is a route which we may not take.

Oracle version would be 7.3 or 8.0.

Anybody out there have a similar situation ? Would appreciate your input.
