My experience is that NT software RAID 5 is slow compared non raid configurations. If you feel that you need RAID 5 for safety reasons you should consider a hardware RAID controller with battery backup and a large (>8MB) cache.
Check the NT Event log frequently because this is the only place where NT logs failed disks. You have to reboot the server after replacing a failed disk (even for a hot plug system).
