Hello all,
I think Joseph might be right regarding "old shared memory segments hanging around taking up space." these old shared memory segments are allocated by processes, I think you should check the processes running "with something like ps -ef". You might check what are the processes run when you boot the maching "stored in inittab file". One last suggestion look at the tail of the log file in $ORACLE_HOME\rdbms\log you might find more information.
