John,

If you've put the new SID in oratab, it is probably starting up when the system comes up and indeed is running when you try to restart it. All you really need for multiple instances is seperate SID's, an init<SID>.ora file, ( and possibly separate $ORACLE_HOME's if running different versions ). Sounds like you have it set up right and are just confused about why it's already running.

'm trying to run multiple instances (ie development and production ) on one machine. Shouldn't that just be entries in /etc/oratab? I also thought I could start them manually with ORACLE_SID set to something different. When I do a connect internal and startup it says Oracle is already running, I must shut it down first. When I do what starts up DOES reflect the SID setting.
