We did it ... but is kind of funky.
on the machine being replicated to we used dbms_pipes to call out to a c application that then pulled the long out of the remote system. Works OK for low transactional rates.

BTW: What platform are you on? If your just starting have you considered Oracle8 and CLOB/BLOBs?
