Yeah, isn't it fun upgrading your operating system, all layered products, all non-layered products, and THEN the database? Oh, and of course you only have the weekend to do it (of course, leaving time for a full backup (8 hours) before AND after the upgrade...

There is a software tool to do each of those jobs individually, and suites of tools that attempt to do ALL of those things, and few more, to boot. I haven't had the budget for the bigger tools, but I do use SQLab and AdHawk Spacer (www.quests.com) for performance tuning and space management. What is really nice about them is they will let you download real product, and give you a temporary key. Take 'em for a spin, kick the tires, and such. And you can download the software from their web page without having to sign a ton of paperwork.

And, no, I don't get any kickbacks, other than a beer at IOUW.

I don't know of any FAQ that you can read to help in this matter. However, I'm sure you will get some responses from people regarding the tools that they use.
