Derek,

If you have the luxury of shutting down the database every night, a full system backup of the database will correctly back up the database.

Are you running in archive log mode? Have you had time to research what that is? If you are NOT, you will only be able to recover the database to the point you shut it down for the full system backup. If you ARE running in archive log mode, you should be able to recover all transactions that were committed prior to the failure.

Whether you run in archive log mode is a decision you need to make based on the sensitivity of your data, and how easy it is to reenter a day's work. Database backup and recovery are extremely important issues. If you have any concerns about it, it may be worth your while to hire a consultant to explain the costs and benefits of the various options. You could also pick up Rama's book on Disaster Recovery, which covers the subject in detail.

Remember, a backup/recovery plan should not be trusted until you TEST it! Then, and only then, will you know if you got it right!
