I don't understand. With a hot backup you should still be able to access the database. Sure, there might be a performance drop but it's still working. Please explain more. Regarding your tar tape, check the blocking factor that your tape drive is configured at. Some Unix systems get set up with a very small default block size. Also, if you have the disk space, create the tar to disk and then tar the "tar" file to tape using another process.
