DBA_HISTOGRAMS Question

I  am attempting to use the DBA_HISTOGRAMS view to better understand the
data distributions within my databases.  The difficulty is that the
Endpoint_value for a varchar2 column is 'normalized' into a number.



Does anybody know the algorithm for this conversion?  Can the original
value be extracted from the Endpoint_value?
