Altering indexes with users logged in

Anyone ever altered an index (increasing MAXEXTENTS) while users are logged in and using the index? I'll probably wait till I can boot everyone out so I can avoid the "IN USE" errors, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a way to avoid this and do it live.

thanks,
