Alert Log Monitor

I am looking for monitor programs ( shell scripts, perl etc) that can check alert log and let me know if there are errors in it. I can write something that can grep for errors but I want to specify list of errors that I am interested in and only be mailed or paged about them. Does anybody have a home grown stuff that can do this?
