question on spatial data

I am working on a project involving radar mapping of the earth's land surfaces. It would be very useful to us to be able to treat areas of the earth's surface as data items. The scale is such that we cannot treat these areas as flat - they must be surfaces of a sphere. We would like to be able to do such things as find the overlap of 2 or more areas, what points lie within an area, etc. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience as to whether Oracle's spatial data option and/or 3rd party software would handle this?

Thanks for any info

John Thompson

P.S. our news server is flaky so email instead/in addition to a posting would be appreciated.
