Richard,
I teach at a local University as well as work as a consultant and contract programmer. I think it would be wise for you to educate one of your current programmers and use them. Certainly anyone who has passed through a Computer Science program can think and reason far better than the average CIS grad and could easily pick up the techniques and design considerations for a DBA position (normalization of tables, etc).
You did not, however tell us the size of your company and what the position would actually entail.
