If the question is how to hold a tablespace in backupmode as short time as possible, then you could (provided you have the tools and the space):

1. Create a mirror of the tablespaces files
2. Mark the tablespace for 'begin backup'.
3. Break the mirror
4. Mark the tablespace as 'end backup'.
5. Copy the broken mirror to tape.
