Stephane,

Hot backups require that you run Oracle in archivelog mode. Once this is set up you can use o/s commands to backup or copy the database files.

If you would like more info. on this drop me a line or have a look at the Oracle documentation. Also check out the "Oracle Backup And Recovery Handbook" by Ram Velpuri (Oracle Press ISBN 0-07-882106-1). This contains backup scripts for VMS and Unix along with many recovery scenarios.
