Richard,

Do you mean you do not want to use Oracle Installer? I used Oracle Installer (version 4) to create a second instance: Create/Upgrade Database Objects. It will prompt you for a new SID name (and many other things).
Had to generate new tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora files with Network Manager (on a PC with Windows) for SQL*Net. Also had to create scott/tiger and the demo tables. The second instance is up and running, the listener too.

Now I'm wondering if i have left out something imporant by using Oracle Installer to create a second instance!

I have Oracle Server7 7.3.2.2.0, HP-UX 10.20.
