My organization ordered the Workgroup server back in October. It was my
first,
direct experience the Oracle. I was really disappointed. I think we were
one of
the first to order for Solaris (it had been out for a while on NT). It
wouldn't
install according to the instructions, and there was no sane way to
install
Pro*C. In addition to shipping the Workgroup server, Oracle sent us a
copy of
the fullblown 7.3.x server, and some of the Enterprise server stuff. We
were in
a real bind, and Oracle gave us the go ahead to install the full 7.3
server.
The only difference I saw between the two was the WG server's web
interface. It
was nice. Beyond that, the core server is the same. I think your
speculation about
competing with SQL Server may be right. WG server was nothing more than
a wrapper
around their core server software.
