Installation questions

I am currently in the process of trying to install Oracle 7.3 for solaris. First question: Do I have to install Network Manager? The instructions state that if you will be using SQL*Net 2.3 (which we will) and the Oracle Names Server (?????? second question - what is it), then you *may* not need to install network manager. (My problem is in finding a pc to use.) I want the installation to go as smoothly as possible, and would appreciate any information you may be able to pass on regarding this.
