Forgot to add one thing: The reason I'm not populating the field at time of insert is that the table is being inserted into from another group's application(chemical package), and they aren't modifying the interface. This is supposed to be a behind-the-scenes action so as to generate a value which can be used as a unique identifier between our instances.
