i set one up, using 32k strips; that is, each 32k advanced to the next disk array round-robin. the app was highly transactional with large numbers of users (up to 1000). we reasoned that this db would have mostly write activity (lookup tables mostly cached). re-reads of old transactions would be completely random, so we could predict high array utilisation and low contention.

huge strips (1Gb in your example) might be suitable for massive warehouses. but with increased user count and parallelism i might go somewhat smaller strips.
