This is exactly what I do, and I based my approach on bstat/estat. That is I maintain my own set of tables (in another database. monitoring several databases) populated from the V$* views at predefined intervals. The intervals vary from 15 minutes for some statitics down to 30 secs, and could probable go down further.

Yes. They are not real tables and represent views of SGA structures.
