Ask Oracle if you are experiencing one of the several LONG column UPDATE with (or without) TRIGGER LOCKING problems. There are backports of bug number X (sorry, don't remember the number) which involve

  Updates of a table with a long column,   which has row chaining on the row being updated,   which may or may not have a before-update trigger pending,   where row expansion or migration is about to occur.
