Rather than trying to hack yourself out (which is a recipe for disaster), why don't you just use a separate Oracle Home (as documented)
Per Oracle installation there is only one Oracle Inventory, which can deal with multiple Oracle Homes
Just in case you want to continue your experiments: trying to install Oracle under multiple Unix users is also a recipe for disaster.
