I would agree with Dan to go with the larger value.

If you can't do that, go with the smaller and then add an alter to increase the size for the customer that needs the larger value. You won't lose anything.

Or just maintain 2 install scripts with different DDL. How ugly is that!

But there really is no justifiable reason to not go with the larger varchar2 value.
