Truly silly question on my part, but ... what is an ASP or ColdFusion database?

The reason I ask is that I wasn't even aware they were databases. Last time I looked, I understood both to be middle tier technology that included programming models which could connect to databases such as Oracle. Correction to this appreciated.

However, in light of my limited comprehension, I would need to understand your environment a lot better - for example are you using Oracle's middle tier Application Server to access an Oracle database? A few product names and version numbers would be useful for me (and possibly others) to try to help.
