It's easy for you to create sales.earthlink.com, or any other name, as long as it's for your own use only. Simply edit your HOSTS file and add the name with an appropriate ip address. Now when your machine looks up that name it will find that address and everything will work just like normal.
HOWEVER, I don't know if this helps with your oracle question or not.
On windows, the hosts file has traditionally gone in \WINDOWS, though I see it somewhere else on this machine (an XP), so I don't know where it belongs. (And I have a funny feeling it might be called HOSTS.TXT sometimes on windows, again not sure).
