One would have to know a lot more about what you are doing to make a recommendation. How many users? What transaction volume? What types of data? What types of transactions? What security requirements? What need to be operating system independent? What internal skill sets.

One of the largest internet retailers in the world has consistently evaluated dumping Oracle and moving to an open-source product. Every time they finish their evaluation ... they write Oracle another check. So the differences, if you need them, are extremely significant.

Be sure, too, you look at availability requirements and the ability to recover from a loss of hardware, loss of storage media, and other similar disaster scenarious.
