Just a wild guess: In your original posting you have quotation marks around your commands. Could it be you're using dynamic SQL? In that case you'd need to grant the right explicitly, granting it through a role isn't sufficient for dynamic SQL. (One of the little quirks that aren't documented - or at least it escaped my search. It makes sense, though, for security reasons.)
