This explanation does not fit my case, not totally. Even installing the 9i client on PCs where 8i was installed (so it is updated), the oracle directory has wrong permissions. This we already noticed, but can be easily fixed by changing the permissions.

The problem I address (first time Oracle 9i Client installation) remains even after changing permissions - the environment variables are not set appropriately.
