Look, this isn't an issue with the Oracle install per se. I think the *_original_* uninstall went wrong somehow and left me with an "orphaned" service that happens to be an Oracle service, which is now messing up any attempt at a "clean" new install.
Maybe I should ask on a Windows group or something?

and nothing there seems to fit what I need. It was the only page topic
that I thought even came close to what I wanted. Thanks for the link.
