Why not just add a job to the database that creates a file every few
minutes that says "what the hey, I'm up!" You could even make it an
html file with pretty colors and watch it with a browser like
http://demo.bb4.com/bb/ or just check the date on the file. You might
also consider checking for the uppittyness of the expected Oracle
processes ps -ef|egrep -i 'ora_|lsn'
Or just login using sqlplus. Or use OEM.
