Database Administration Career Choice

I am considering a career in database administration or closely
related computer field. Does anyone in this group has some helpful
hints or suggestions?  I have a 4 year engineering degree, a licensed
professional engineer, and am now majoring in Database administration
at a local community college.  Also I am studying French and hope to
become fluent enough to work in a French speaking country.  My native
language is English.
