Okay, I see that it is a DBI (DB Interface), so the original posting was a little misleading. It doesn't change my arguement about .misc being the wrong place for it.

Whether the product earns money for the poster or not, it is still a PRODUCT announcement. I'd still prefer it go in .marketplace group.

Also "open source" does not by itself mean non-commercial. here's a test:
 How would a casual reader know that in c.d.o.marketplace the article

Subj: new PEAR DBI released

      is ON topic but

Subj: new SAP released

      is OFF topic?

I cannot see the difference. "splain it to me lucy"

As noted earlier, a more descriptive name might help. As I switch from reading comp.databases and comp.databases.oracle.misc, I easily misread the standalone "DB" to mean that PEAR is a DATABASE.

These discussions are good, if nothing else, for getting the regular posters on the same page about what's off topic.
