I've got this sorted.

I used msconfig.exe (rather than the Services.exe tool). Basically I took the "Diagnostic Startup" option and rebooted, did the install and then used msconfig to return to "Normal Startup". Job Done.

Thanks for the info - I shall be checking out the sysinternals website. It seems there are a lot of useful windows tools there.
