Wanna have a house ? why having a cellar for it ? Isnīt a *tent* much cheaper and flexible :) ?
OK, many houses do not have a cellar (well, in my country most have),
but what You should get from it is that
Data Models are THE VERY BASIS of a well designed db-app.
On a base of junk You will only setup a house of junk.
And far too many data models out there are simply junk,
frustrating the dbas as well as developers.
Your question is like
Why having different data types in programming languages ...
or
Why having Characters for a written language ...
Because they have a lot of benefits.
A well designed data model is independent of the contained data.
You do it once and then put data in and out without any need to change it.
In other words - You build Your house once, and then user it for a long
time.
Of course You will find a lot of ignorants denying all these benefits. Some of them are Your managers ... in some cases You may convince them, in others You may not - after Your graduation ...
