A very good reference is Dave Hay's book "Data Model Patterns -- Conventions of Thought"

I'd like to underscore Daniel's basic point -- whether a classroom or workshop or mentoring session, getting a group together with a room full of whiteboards to explore different data modelling* solutions is extremely beneficial, no matter how long you've been doing it -- so much more-so for beginners.

| There may be one, there may be many, but I would consider anything
| less than a classroom environment inappropriate. The subject is far
| to big and too complex.
