Yep. Oracle 8i Personal Edition (PE) for Win98 is not certified for Win2000. Win2000 is a very different operating system under the hood and nothing like Win98 - despite the common look and feel GUI.

You must install a certfied version of Personal Oracle for Win2000. Don't waste your time hacking a non-certified version and trying to make it work.

The Big Hammer Approach is the only one that will work now. :-)

Go into the Registry Editor and hunt for all Oracle keys (use the word "oracle" or the old path of your Win98 OraPE installation). Delete all of them.

Then trash the entire Win98 OraPE directory.

Download a certified version (beg/borrow/buy the CDs). And install that instead. Also go for Oracle 9i instead.

PS. I think it a bad idea in general to upgrade from Win98/ME to Win200/XP. A brand new install is much cleaner and less troublesome. IMO.
